Grahamstown National Arts Festival

The annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival is one of the most important cultural events on the South African calendar and is Africa's biggest annual celebration of the arts, attracting more than 50,000 people. A diversity of art forms is represented in over 500 shows from street theatre, exhibitions, dance and comedy to opera, drama, ballet, lectures and workshops and there really ought to be something to delight everybody. The vibrant little university town also comes alive with parties, live music and big social events, with restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs doing a booming trade. The sprawling craft markets are also a big attraction, with an official festival market set up annually on the Great Field of Rhodes University, and numerous unofficial markets crowding the streets and thoroughfares of the town. Visitors are advised to book accommodation for the festival as early as possible because Grahamstown is not a big place and accommodation of a good calibre often runs out quite fast. Grahamstown is an interesting place to visit at any time of year, but the National Arts Festival showcases the town in the best possible light.
