Weather in London in March

London begins to emerge from indoors during March, as the days lengthen and the sun shines a little more frequently. The city prepares for the advent of spring and another busy summer season, and the crocus and daffodil bulbs push their heads above the soil in Regent’s Park and London's other green spaces.

Climate in London in March

March is one of the driest months in London, with an average of 11 wet days, and as winter recedes temperatures begin to rise to a minimum of 3°C and a maximum of 10°C. Rainfall tends to be in the form of short showers. As spring approaches blue sky can be glimpsed between the clouds, and average daily hours of sunshine increase from a dismal 2 in February to 4 in March. At the end of March England’s summer time comes into operation and the clocks are set forward an hour.

What's on in London and is March a good time to visit?

St Patrick’s Day (March 17) may have originated in Ireland, but it is celebrated with great gusto in London, with a parade through the city centre and a week of festivities centered around everything Irish. The theatres and major entertainment venues are all in full swing during March, with many new productions opening up, and there are numerous exhibitions and fairs on offer, including the Ideal Home Show, Chelsea Antiques Fair and the Affordable Art Fair at Battersea Park. The last weekend in March (or sometimes falling in the first week of April) sees the iconic Oxford vs Cambridge boat race take place on the Thames.

What to pack for a holiday in London in March

Spring may well be in the air, but the weather in London in March still calls for a warm, waterproof coat (for those unexpected showers) and light jumpers. If you are planning to sight-see or visit exhibitions, make sure you have comfortable shoes. The London Underground, with its miles of corridors and long escalators, and the often uneven pavements, can be hard on the feet.
